Yesterday, Wednesday, August 23, 2023, the Law Institute of the University of Iceland held a seminar on the carbon market in cooperation with the University's Sustainability Institute. The carbon options market has grown rapidly in recent times and there are great opportunities there to direct capital into this sector so that climate change can be combated with even greater force. The symposium discussed the global carbon market, the development of the alternative carbon market, and state involvement in carbon trading. In addition, the alternative carbon market was reviewed from the perspective of the sector. Various experts spoke and Björgvin Péter Stefánsson, Managing Director of YGG participated in the panel.
Earlier this year, the Icelandic state set up a task force tasked with mapping the status and opportunities for carbon trading in Iceland, as well as looking at the benefits of projects that can produce such units. The results of a working group will be published next year and that work will become an important tool in policy making on the development of the options market.
