Our team and our journey

Our mission

Iceland has put forward an ambitious action plan that will contribute to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and lay the foundation for the country's carbon neutrality by 2040. Among the measures planned for the next few years, is the promotion of forestry, the promotion of land reclamation, and the restoration of wetlands.

Yggdrasill Carbon (YGG) is a company that was founded in Egilsstaður in 2020 and works on climate projects in Iceland's nature that provide certified carbon credits. One certified carbon unit is created when one ton of carbon dioxide equivalent, which has been measured using approved methods and certified as such, is removed from the atmosphere or is prevented from entering the atmosphere. Our main focus has been on carbon sequestration in the forest, but alongside those projects we are working on the development of projects related to soil and wetland restoration.

Starfsstöðvar
YGG's headquarters are in Egilsstaðir, with additional offices in Reykjavík and Borgarnes. The company has five full-time employees, and during the sumer months, up to 20 contractors join the team.
5 ára reynsla
YGG's first year of operations was in 2021, when a pilot project was carried out at Óseyri in Stöðvarfjörður. Since then, we have planted nearly three million trees across the country and are actively working on other certified wetland restoration projects.
Sérfæðiþekking
YGG's team possesses extensive expertise across multiple fields, including forestry and land management, project management, environmental issues, certification, nature conservation, quality assurance, law and finance. Together we form a strong and capable team, committed to delivering high-quality porjects built on trust and excellence.

Certification

All YGG projects undergo certification by an independent party. This process ensures that the carbon sequestration achieved through these projects matches the amount issued for carbon credits, making the process transparent and rigorous. Certification also involves extensive consultation, encourages critical thinking, prioritizes quality over quantity, and ensures that every step forward is guided by sustainability.

Broader Impact

Certification standards require that projects create positive impacts beyond just climate benefits. The wider effects of our projects include increased job opportunities in rural areas and enhanced value creation that benefits society as a whole. Additionally, our projects contribute to land restoration, greater biodiversity on degraded land, and healthier, more nutrient-rich soils.

Initially, each project area is mapped, and its development is regularly monitored with the help of drones in collaboration with Svarma. Svarma's solution, Datact, manages all data and ensures increased transparency and accessibility for stakeholders. Communicating accurate and reliable information about project results is a cornerstone of climate action and is one of YGG's top priorities.

Frequently asked qestions
1
What are the main social impacts of YGG projects?
YGG projects create jobs both during the project period and for the future. In the first implementation year of YGG in 2022, over 30 people were involved in various capacities, and this number has increased each year. The areas need to be prepared, which includes activities such as fencing, soil work, and archaeological surveys. Mapping is also essential, both on the ground and with drones. Planting and fertilization are carried out, followed by inspections after planting. In the subsequent years, the area requires monitoring, frost heaving corrections, and replanting assessments within five years. Every five years, drones are used to map the areas to monitor progress, and every five to ten years, extensive measurements of carbon storage and other factors are conducted. Additionally, the projects contribute to a job creation in forest management and sustainable harvesting for future generations.

2
What are the main positive environmental impacts of YGG projects?
The primary goal of YGG's projects and their main positive environmental impact is to capture carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Additional benefits of these projects may include increased biodiversity on degraded land, enhanced landscape diversity, the buildup of carbon reserves in soil, and efforts to combat soil erosion.

3
Is afforestation a threat to birdlife?
Forestry can impact certain bird species that prefer heathlands over forested areas. As afforestation increases, this should be taken into consideration, as Iceland holds an international responsibility for the habitats of certain heathland bird species. Currently, heathlands in Iceland cover approximately 1,850,000 hectares, while forested areas account for around 200,000 hectares. Given this, forestry is unlikely to have significant impact at present. Additionally, every year, degraded land is restored creating new habitats for heathland birds.
