Land Use
We select land and methods in collaboration with landowners with regard to ecological types, soil, potential for carbon sequestration and various other factors.
Certification
All projects undergo a rigorous certification process to ensure quality and transparency.
Finance
The landowner benefits financially from the project and can increase their returns by contributing more to the initiative.
Community
Projects generate local income through maintenance, monitoring, measurement, and certification over a 50-year period. They can also become valuable recreational areas for landowners and surrounding community.
Frequently asked question
1
How can I be sure that the expected carbon sequestration will occur and that carbon credits will be generated from my forest?
The forest carbon calculator predicts carbon sequestration in forests based on decades of tree measurements from various species and conditions in Iceland. This data provides a reliable basis for predicting future growth. The same equations used in climate accounting in Iceland by the IPCC are used to convert tree growth into carbon sequestration. However, unforeseen events such as natural disasters or diseases may affect the actual carbon sequestration during the project period and potentially reduce the number of units generated for both the landowner and YGG. At the beginning of the project, a detailed risk assessment is carried out and preventive measures are taken to minimize this risk.

2
What happens in 50 years?
The project spans 50 years and is in line with carbon sequestration forecasts. Although the initial forecast does not extend beyond this period, which marks the end of the YGG project, the forest remains the property of the landowner. A landowner can choose to extend the certification period and continue to sell certified carbon credits.

3
When does a landowner receive carbon credits?
The landowner receives their share of certified carbon credits when these credits are realized, usually after each carbon measurement made every five to ten years

Process for establishing a contract
In the basic agreement with the landowner, it is specified that if YGG supports all the expenses and efforts of the project, the landowner will receive 5% of the carbon credits generated, while YGG will keep 95%. If the landowner contributes more to the project, such as with work on fences, it is permitted to change the allocation ratios, or to pay the landowner his contribution. All terms beyond the basic contract are open to negotiation.
